In May 2022, a subpoena was issued for these files, and by June, one of Trump’s attorneys certified the recovery of the last classified documents. The decision to proceed with the raid was driven by officials’ skepticism that all classified materials had been retrieved.
After the search, the former president was hit with 40 charges related to the alleged mishandling of classified records and obstruction of governmental efforts to retrieve them. Trump has consistently argued that the charges are politically driven. A federal judge dismissed the case in July 2023, but an appeal is currently in progress.
