George Clooney’s Bold Response to Trump

Famed actor and Democratic supporter, George Clooney, has responded to criticism from former President Donald Trump. The fallout began after Clooney penned a contentious op-ed in July in The New York Times, suggesting President Joe Biden refrain from running in the 2024 presidential election due to fitness concerns. Trump, known for his blunt rhetoric, described Clooney as a “fake movie actor” and questioned his political engagement.

The former President aired his views on Truth Social, stating, “So now fake movie actor George Clooney, who never came close to making a great movie, is getting into the act. He’s turned on Crooked Joe like the rats they both are. What does Clooney know about anything? Clooney should get out of politics and go back to television. Movies never really worked for him!!!”

In response, Clooney, noted for his film accolades and political activism, promptly addressed Trump’s comments during a September 17, 2024, interview on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Leaning into his trademark wit, Clooney humorously suggested he would exit politics if Trump followed suit, a retort that drew laughter and applause from the studio audience.

Clooney’s critique had drawn mixed responses within the Democratic Party, with some applauding him for expressing views others might shy away from. Trump’s post on Truth Social was the most direct rebuttal, but others in political circles have either supported or opposed Clooney’s call for new leadership.

On “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Clooney acknowledged the potential risks associated with his op-ed, understanding that his public statements could sway the political scene. Nevertheless, the op-ed played a substantial role in Biden’s decision to step down from the race, opening the path for Vice President Kamala Harris to become the Democratic nominee.

The degree to which Clooney’s op-ed influenced Biden’s withdrawal has sparked considerable discussion. While Kimmel proposed that the letter was a major factor, Clooney minimized his role, commending Biden for making the challenging and unprecedented decision to withdraw.

Notwithstanding the ongoing disagreement with Trump, Clooney continues to participate in political discourse. As a prominent Democratic fundraiser in Hollywood, Clooney has consistently backed various candidates, including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Joe Biden.
