Former “The Bachelor” contestant, Hailey Merkt, has died at 31 years old after a valiant battle with leukemia. Her close ones announced the tragic news on her Instagram account on Tuesday, July 26, 2024.
The Instagram post began by expressing deep grief over Merkt’s passing, who lost her life fighting the disease. It went on to detail how she faced her disease with notable strength, dignity, and selflessness. Her determination and courage surpassed all medical expectations. She chose to spend her final days surrounded by loved ones and partaking in her favorite activities.
Merkt, known for her vibrant personality and love for life, was originally from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. She was a participant in the 2017 season of “The Bachelor” featuring Nick Viall. Although she was eliminated during the second week, she left a memorable impression on her fellow contestants and viewers.
In April 2024, Merkt announced via Instagram that she was free of leukemia after undergoing an experimental treatment and a bone marrow transplant. Regrettably, six weeks later, she discovered that her leukemia cells had aggressively returned. Despite the dismal prognosis, Merkt continued to live her life to its fullest, spending valuable time with her family and friends.
Various Bachelor alumni have expressed their sorrow and paid heartfelt tributes. Danielle Maltby, a contestant from the same season, felt privileged to have known Merkt. She referred to her as a genuine, warm, and beautiful soul. Maltby was grateful for their friendship, both during the show and in real life, and wished her to rest in peace.
Raven Gates, the runner-up of season 21, expressed her deep sadness at the news. She was disappointed, having hoped for Merkt’s recovery, and affirmed that Merkt would be remembered always.
Merkt’s GoFundMe page, which was established to support her medical expenses, confirmed her passing and noted that it would remain open until August 10. The page has raised over $115,000, a testament to the overwhelming support from those who followed her journey. Merkt’s loved ones expressed their appreciation for the financial aid, which helped alleviate the cost of medical and living expenses throughout her treatment.
Merkt’s death has left a significant void in the lives of those who knew her. Her family, which includes her mother Michele, sister Jenny, brother Kyle, and partner Henry, supported her throughout her battle. Michele, in particular, was acknowledged for her unwavering support, undertaking multiple roles to ensure Merkt’s well-being.
As per her wishes, there will be no formal funeral. Instead, Merkt’s loved ones encourage those who wish to honor her memory to share their stories and memories on her Instagram account.
