Michelle Obama Defends Olympic Star Against Critics

A show of sportsmanship by US gymnasts Simone Biles, 27, and Jordan Chiles, 23, at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Monday, August 5, sparked a lively debate, with reactions coming from various sectors, including former First Lady Michelle Obama. The controversy centered on Biles and Chiles bowing to gold medalist Rebeca Andrade, 25, a Brazilian gymnast, on the medal podium, a gesture that NFL player Marlon Humphrey criticized.

The bowing took place during the medal ceremony for the floor exercise event where Andrade secured the gold medal, Biles won the silver, and Chiles took the bronze, which was subsequently revoked (see below). The gymnasts’ action, which was meant to honor Andrade’s victory and her significant comeback from three anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, received diverse reactions.

Marlon Humphrey, a Baltimore Ravens cornerback, expressed his disdain for the act on social media, describing it as “literally disgusting.” His comment ignited a wave of backlash from fans and supporters of Biles and Chiles, many of whom defended the gymnasts, underlining the importance of Andrade’s achievement and the sportsmanship they demonstrated.

An “X” poster proposed a question, wondering if sportsmanship among three Black women who excel in their field could be considered “disgusting.” This sentiment echoed those who viewed the act as an inspiring show of respect and camaraderie.

Michelle Obama, a vocal advocate for women and girls in sports, addressed the controversy by praising the gymnasts’ mutual support. She lauded their display of sisterhood and sportsmanship, recognizing their apparent affection and congratulating Rebeca, Jordan, and Simone on her “X” page, indicating her clear support for Biles and Chiles.

In an interview with NBC, Biles explained the reason behind the gesture, pointing out sportsmanship and supporting competitors regardless of the result. She and Chiles were pleased for Andrade, recognizing her hard work and exceptional performance, particularly acknowledging her floor routine as the standout performance of the day and the Olympics.

The incident underscores the profound bonds that athletes form, surpassing national and competitive boundaries. Andrade, who has had a noteworthy performance in the Paris Games, winning four medals including the gold in the floor final, expressed her appreciation for the support. “We can show the Black Power,” Andrade said after winning the gold medal, acknowledging the shared heritage and unity among the athletes.

Meanwhile, Humphrey faced substantial backlash for his comments, prompting him to post a follow-up on social media. “I’m lowkey getting cooked right now,” he confessed, acknowledging the severe criticism he received.

After her celebrated win, Jordan Chiles officially lost her bronze medal in the floor event from the Paris Olympics after a Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) judge ruled in favor of two Romanian gymnasts on August 10.

The judge at CAS sided with Romanian gymnasts Ana Barbosu — who was the original bronze medalist — and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, who argued that Chiles had been mistakenly awarded third place during the floor final on August 5.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Sunday, Aug. 11, that Barbosu will now receive the bronze medal.
