On August 8, 2024, Puerto Rican golf legend and philanthropist Juan Antonio “Chi Chi” Rodriguez died at the age of 88. Rodriguez, born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, was known for his dynamic play style and dedication to helping disadvantaged youth.

Rodriguez, born on October 23, 1936, was the second eldest of six children in a family grappling with financial difficulties. Raised in the sugar cane fields of Puerto Rico, he began playing golf using a guava tree branch and a tin can, and by the age of 12 he was shooting a 67, highlighting his innate gift for the game.

Following his service in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957, Rodriguez turned professional in 1960 and joined the PGA Tour. His career spanned 21 years, during which he won eight PGA Tour titles, starting with the Denver Open in 1963. His vibrant personality and iconic “matador routine,” in which he would twirl his club like a sword, made him popular among fans. “Chi Chi’s passion for charity and outreach was surpassed only by his incredible talent with a golf club in his hand,” said PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan.

His success continued in the Senior PGA Tour (now known as the PGA Tour Champions), where he triumphed in 22 tournaments between 1985 and 2002. His total career earnings were over $7.6 million, reflecting his skill on the golf course.

Rodriguez was also a dedicated philanthropist, co-founding the Chi Chi Rodriguez Youth Foundation in Clearwater, Florida in 1979. The foundation, in collaboration with Pinellas County Schools and the First Tee program, utilizes golf as a medium to teach life skills to at-risk youth.

In 1998, Rodriguez survived a severe heart attack, referred to by doctors as a “widow-maker.” Despite this health setback, he returned to the golf course for a few more years before focusing on his philanthropic endeavors. In Puerto Rico, he was involved in a golf community project and hosted a local radio talk show.

Rodriguez was inducted into the PGA World Golf Hall of Fame in 1992, marking a significant achievement in his illustrious career. He is survived by his wife, Iwalani, of nearly 60 years and his stepdaughter, Donnette.

The legacy of Juan “Chi Chi” Rodriguez will be remembered for his contributions to golf and his consistent dedication to philanthropy. His life serves as an inspiring example of the influence one individual can have through determination, generosity, and a passion for their craft.
