A shocking incident occurred at Rice University in Houston, Texas on August 26, 2024. Andrea Rodriguez Avila, a junior student, was found lifeless in her dorm room on the first day of classes. The case is being investigated as a murder-suicide by local authorities.

Avila, a 21-year-old pre-law student from Maryland, was discovered shot multiple times alongside Habeneyom Belai, who suffered a seemingly self-inflicted gunshot wound. This information was confirmed by Rice University Police Chief Clemente Rodriguez.

The grim discovery was made at Jones College, a residential hall on the university campus. Avila’s family had requested a welfare check after she failed to attend her first semester classes, which led officers to the scene. Belai, who was not a Rice student, was found dead in Avila’s room. Police noted that there were no signs of forced entry, leading them to believe that Avila likely invited him into her dorm room.

A note found at the scene indicated distress in the relationship between Avila and the Belai. Chief Rodriguez revealed that the investigation has unearthed evidence of relationship issues, but the investigation is still ongoing.

Rice University’s President Reginald DesRoches expressed profound grief over the incident. He acknowledged the long-term impact this tragedy will have on the tight-knit university community and pledged full support for Avila’s family. He also emphasized the university’s commitment to providing necessary resources for students and staff to cope with this tragic incident.

President DesRoches assured the Rice community that the campus is secure and there is no ongoing threat. He urged the community to unite in their sorrow and extend compassion and support to each other during the challenging times ahead.

Reflecting on the deep pain felt by the campus community, DesRoches, a parent himself, said he could only begin to fathom the anguish experienced by Avila’s family and the community at large.

The incident led to a two-hour shelter-in-place order for the entire campus. Classes were canceled for the rest of the day and the following Tuesday, allowing the campus community time to process the shocking event.

The Rice University Police Department, with assistance from the Houston Police Department, is continuing the investigation into the circumstances leading up to the tragic incident.
