A heartbreaking incident occurred in Douglas, Georgia on July 3, 2024 when a two-year-old boy, Nakyzi Odums, tragically lost his life after accidentally shooting himself in a Walmart parking lot. His parents were in close proximity, shopping at a fireworks stand.
According to witnesses, Sam Odums and Laileighauna Parks, the parents had just left their car to buy fireworks when they heard a loud noise. Upon returning to their vehicle, they discovered their son with a gunshot wound in his chest. He received immediate medical care and was transported to a trauma center in Jacksonville, Florida. However, he succumbed to his injuries three days later, on July 6, 2024.
The Douglas Police Department issued a statement confirming Nakyzi’s death and expressing their condolences, “The toddler who accidentally shot himself on July 3, 2024 tragically died this afternoon, July 6, 2024. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family during this challenging period.”
Douglas Police Chief Brannen Pruette emphasized the need for firearm safety, particularly around children. “You’re allowed to have a gun in the car, but when there’s a child involved, you need to make sure that the gun is secure so that the child doesn’t have access to it,” Pruette said. The investigation into how Nakyzi gained access to the firearm continues.
Initial reports suggest that Nakyzi was seated in the front of the vehicle, and the gun may have been within his reach, possibly in the side door pocket. The authorities are investigating whether any negligence or oversight by the parents contributed to this tragic event. Any potential charges against the parents have yet to be determined.
The event has deeply affected the community, with many expressing their support for the family. Nakyzi’s grandmother, in her appeal for donations on a GoFundMe page set up to assist with funeral expenses, wrote, “As one of his grandmothers, I am stepping in and requesting support of burial for our sweet baby. Donations will also allow his mom and dad time to grieve properly. Please donate anything you desire if it’s in your heart and will.” The page has so far generated over $3,000 to help the family financially during this difficult time.
