An argument over counterfeit money led to the fatal shooting of a 33-year-old Sonic Drive-In manager in San Antonio, Texas. The tragic event unfolded on Sunday, July 7, 2024, around 9:40 p.m. at the Sonic outlet located on Babcock Road and Huebner Road.

Daniel Shrewsbury, who was about to turn 34, was engaged in a dispute with two female patrons over the alleged use of fake cash, as per family members. The altercation resulted in Shrewsbury being shot. Despite retreating to the eatery after being wounded, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jojo Shrewsbury, the younger brother of the deceased, in an interview, said, “My brother went out there and confronted them about the fake money, and he got shot.” He added, “He was an amazing brother, not only to me but to everyone.”

The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) has released images of the two women who were allegedly involved in the dispute. One was seen wearing a black T-shirt and a gold chain, the other was dressed in a white sundress with a floral pattern. Despite the release of their photos, no arrests have been made, and the identities of the suspects have not been revealed.

A witness present at the drive-through line during the incident narrated the terrifying experience to KENS5. “I was on my phone sitting in line and heard what sounded like the first gunshot,” the witness said. “Then I heard two additional gunshots and realized something was happening. An employee ran to my car and told me an employee had been shot. She had a complete look of shock on her face.”

The unfortunate death of Shrewsbury has left his family and the community in a state of grief. His sister, Jazmin Robinson, expressed her sorrow and anger in a poignant Facebook post. “They took my brother without any regard, ignoring the impact on his family and loved ones. It’s truly a sorrowful world we live in. I never imagined I would lose my brother in this manner,” she wrote. “I will love you forever, big brother. They may have taken your body, but they can’t take your soul. The memories of our time together will always remain with me.”

Peggy Cofield, the grieving mother of Shrewsbury, described her son as a “caring” man who was adored by “many people.” Shrewsbury was the oldest among three siblings and more than just an employee to those who knew him at Sonic.

Commenting on the tragic incident, James Moore, a restaurant owner in San Antonio and a member of the Texas Restaurant Association State Board, stressed the significance of safety protocols in the industry. “I guarantee there’s not one operator that did not feel struck by the news of this incident,” Moore said. “We all work so hard to protect our staff from horrible occurrences like this. The thought of any of my staff being put in a situation like that gives me nightmares.”

In memory of Shrewsbury, a memorial has been set up outside the Sonic eatery, adorned with flowers and candles. The local community continues to rally, hoping for justice for the fallen manager.
