Esta TerBlanche, a renowned South African actress known for playing Princess Gillian Andrassy in the legendary soap opera “All My Children,” has died at the age of 51 in her North Hollywood, California residence. Her family verified her unexpected death on Thursday, July 18, 2024, and the cause is under investigation.

TerBlanche, who won the Miss Teen South Africa title in 1991, started her acting career in South Africa with the soap opera “Egoli: Place of Gold.” Her transition to American television came in 1997, which led to widespread recognition for her role in “All My Children.” She portrayed a princess who stirred up trouble, a character that fans adored until her exit from the show in 2001. She briefly reprised her role in the show’s final season in 2011.

TerBlanche’s goddaughter, Barbie Ashley, revealed that TerBlanche’s body was found in her home a day after her death. “It was a shock to all of us,” Ashley said. “She was full of life and had so many plans.”

Lisa Rodrigo, TerBlanche’s publicist, mentioned that there’s currently no additional information about the cause of death. She confirmed that the actress had been dead for around a day before she was discovered. “Esta was a beautiful soul, both inside and out,” Rodrigo said. “Her loss is deeply felt by everyone who knew her.”

TerBlanche’s career in the United States started when she moved to the country in 1995. In a 2021 interview, she referred to the move as a “very scary” experience but also a dream fulfilled. “I always wanted to act in America, and ‘All My Children’ gave me that opportunity,” she expressed.

While on “All My Children,” TerBlanche worked with numerous accomplished actors, including Cameron Mathison, who played her on-screen love interest. Mathison commemorated her on social media, praising her kindness and professionalism. “Esta was one of the sweetest people I’ve ever worked with,” Mathison posted. “Her smile could light up a room.”

After her stint on “All My Children,” TerBlanche went back to South Africa and continued to be involved in the entertainment industry. She took part in various television shows, presented programs, and engaged in charitable activities. Her manager, Annie Spoliansky, characterized her as a “kind, loving, and giving person” with a strong desire to help others.

TerBlanche also devoted herself to animal rescue endeavors. She frequently used social media to express her affection for animals, posting pictures of her pets and urging her followers to adopt rescued animals. “She had a heart for animals and was always caring for stray cats and dogs,” Spoliansky noted.

The unexpected death of TerBlanche follows a series of recent losses in the soap opera community, including actors Doug Sheehan, Alec Musser, and Johnny Wactor. Her passing has left her peers and fans in a state of grief.

A spokesperson for “All My Children” described TerBlanche as a cherished member of the soap opera family. “Her portrayal of Gillian Andrassy was iconic, and she will be remembered for her talent and warmth,” the spokesperson said.

TerBlanche is survived by her ex-husband and her goddaughter, who have requested privacy during this challenging time. While funeral plans have yet to be announced, a memorial service is anticipated in both South Africa and the United States in honor of her life and career.

As authorities continue to investigate the cause of her death, fans and co-workers alike remember Esta TerBlanche for her significant contributions to daytime television and her kind nature. Her legacy as a beloved actress and compassionate humanitarian will be treasured by many.
