Renowned business news anchor and high-profile supporter of former President Donald Trump, Lou Dobbs, passed away on July 18, 2024. He was 78. Dobbs’ death was announced via a statement on his official social media account, which defined him as a “fighter till the very end.”
Dobbs started his illustrious career in broadcast journalism at CNN in 1980, the same year the network was established. He anchored the business news program “Moneyline” and was a crucial figure at CNN for over two decades. In 2009, Dobbs left to help Rupert Murdoch in setting up the Fox Business Network.
A spokesperson from CNN expressed their condolences, saying, “Lou was one of the CNN originals who helped launch and shape the network. We are saddened to hear about his passing and extend our sincerest condolences to his wife Debi, children, and his family.”
As Trump’s influence expanded within Republican politics, Dobbs became a fervent supporter. He utilized his platform to disseminate anti-immigration sentiment and criticize the alleged “deep state.” His backing of Trump’s unfounded allegations about the 2020 election resulted in significant legal problems for Fox News. Dominion Voting Systems sued Fox for defamation, culminating in a $787 million settlement last year. The lawsuit from Smartmatic, which also names Dobbs, is still proceeding.
In response to these legal issues, Fox Business discontinued Dobbs’ show, “Lou Dobbs Tonight,” in February 2021.
Former President Donald Trump lauded Dobbs, declaring him a friend and a “truly incredible journalist, reporter, and talent.” Trump further added, “He understood the World, and what was ‘happening,’ better than others. Lou was unique in so many ways, and loved our Country. Our warmest condolences to his wonderful wife, Debi, and family. He will be greatly missed!”
Following Dobbs’ death, Fox News also released a statement saying, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Lou Dobbs. An incredible business mind with a gift for broadcasting, Lou helped pioneer cable news into a successful and influential industry. We are immensely grateful for his many contributions and send our heartfelt condolences to his family.”
However, Dobbs’ career was not without its share of controversies. His exit from CNN in 2009 was partially attributed to his promotion of the “birther” conspiracy theory about President Barack Obama’s birthplace.
Despite the controversies, Dobbs had a significant influence on cable news. He played a pivotal role in shaping CNN’s business news coverage and later brought his unique style to Fox Business. His support for Trump and propagation of populist ideas garnered him a committed following and considerable criticism.
Lou Dobbs is survived by his wife, Debi Lee Segura, and their children. The cause of death has not been disclosed. Fans and colleagues have been expressing their tributes to Dobbs on social media, remembering him as a trailblazer in cable news and a passionate commentator.
A statement on his social media account said, “Lou’s legacy will forever live on as a patriot and a great American. Lou was a fighter till the very end—fighting for what mattered to him the most, God, his family, and the country.”
