The peaceful atmosphere in Bushey, Hertfordshire, England was torn apart on the evening of July 9, 2024, when a horrific incident occurred at the home of BBC horse racing commentator John Hunt. His wife and two daughters were tragically killed in a violent assault.

Carol Hunt, aged 61, along with her daughters Hannah, 28, and Louise, 25, were killed following an attack with a crossbow. The alleged attacker, 26-year-old Kyle Clifford, previously dated Louise Hunt. Following a large-scale search operation, Clifford was arrested and is presently receiving treatment for injuries.

The terrifying event started shortly before 7 p.m. Police officers, upon arriving at the Hunt family residence on Ashlyn Close, discovered the three women suffering from severe injuries. Authorities believe the women were held tied up and gagged for several hours before the actual attack. “Sadly, despite their best efforts, the women died a short time later,” stated Jon Simpson, Hertfordshire Constabulary’s local policing commander, during a press briefing.

Authorities characterized the attack as a “targeted incident.” The search for Clifford was immediate and thorough, culminating in his discovery the next afternoon at Lavender Hill Cemetery, Enfield with serious self-inflicted stab wounds to the chest. He was subsequently transported to a hospital where he is under police guard.

Detective Inspector Justine Jenkins from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit requested respect for the family’s privacy as they grapple with the enormity of their loss.

“This remains an extremely challenging period for the family of the victims, and we kindly request that their privacy be honored as they process this tragic event,” Jenkins said, adding that the premature identification of the victims has compounded the family’s distress.

The shocking news has prompted an outpouring of tributes and condolences from colleagues and the wider horse racing community. “Today’s news about John Hunt’s family is heartbreaking,” read a note sent to BBC staff. The Hunt family was described by colleagues as “beautiful souls” and “the loveliest, gentlest family.”

Residents and friends have expressed their shock and sorrow. Su Kehinde, a neighbor, described the family as “the meekest human beings. They did not deserve this. They were beautiful souls.” Another resident, Glyn Nicholas, recalled Louise’s successful dog grooming business, indicating the community’s high regard for the family.

The accused, Clifford, a former British Army soldier who served briefly before leaving in 2022, was acquainted with the family through his previous relationship with Louise. Clifford’s relationship with Louise reportedly involved control and restriction of her behavior and social activities, according to sources.

The crossbow used in the attack has been recovered by police, who are investigating the potential involvement of other weapons. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has requested an immediate review of crossbow regulations in light of the attack. “We keep legislation under constant review,” a Home Office spokesperson said, acknowledging that a call for evidence was launched earlier this year to determine if further crossbow controls are needed.

The untimely demise of Carol, Hannah, and Louise Hunt has deeply affected their community and the broader horse racing community. Vigils and memorials have been organized by friends and colleagues to honor their memory.
