Richard David Hendrickson, 57, the CEO of Lifetime Products, and his 16-year-old daughter, Sally, were tragically killed when a mini bulldozer fell from a tow truck, crushing their vehicle in Ogden Canyon, Utah. The incident took place on July 6, 2024 during a family outing that included wakeboarding and waterskiing at Pine View Reservoir.

At the time of the accident, Hendrickson was driving a GMC pickup truck carrying his wife and three of their children. The bulldozer became detached and fell on the vehicle. Hendrickson and his youngest daughter, Sally, died on the spot, while his wife and two other children suffered injuries but survived. The eldest Hendrickson child was not present in the vehicle.

The accident, which took place while the tow truck was making a sharp turn on State Route 39, is currently under investigation by the Utah Department of Public Safety. The investigators are trying to determine the accurate cause of the incident and whether negligence was a factor.

Vince Rhoton, the Executive Vice President of Lifetime Products, remembered Hendrickson as a devoted family man. “Spending time with his family, particularly Sally, was always his priority. He built a chicken coop and learned how to raise chickens to bond with her over something she loved,” remarked Rhoton.

Hendrickson, who started his career as a welder, eventually rose to become the CEO of Lifetime Products, a prominent outdoor furniture company. Rhoton praised Hendrickson’s humility and likability, alongside his exceptional talent.

Reflecting on Hendrickson’s philosophy, Rhoton emphasized the importance of appreciating each day. “Seize the day and be good to the people around you,” he stated.

Barry Mower, the founder of Lifetime Products, hailed Hendrickson’s contribution to the company. “Richard progressed through multiple levels of the company to become President and CEO due to his extraordinary talents and abilities. He was one of my most trusted and cherished friends and will be sorely missed. Lifetime will not be the same without him,” said Mower.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox offered his condolences on social media, acknowledging Hendrickson as a friend and an exceptional leader. He expressed heartbreak over the tragic loss and extended support to the surviving family members.

This incident has led to demands for enhanced safety measures on Highway 39 in Ogden Canyon, Utah. A Change.org petition has been initiated to regulate the types of vehicles allowed on the narrow, two-lane road, given its proximity to the Ogden River and steep mountain cliffs, and the limited shoulder width at certain places. The petition argues that specific large vehicles pose a significant risk to commuters’ safety.

The petition, advocating for a balanced approach that considers economic factors while prioritizing commuter safety, has already attracted over 1,500 signatures. “There is an urgent need to limit the particular categories of vehicles that can drive through this constricted roadway, ensuring the security of all who rely on it,” the petition states.
