Over the weekend, a body was retrieved from the Great Miami River in Middletown, Ohio, putting an end to a search that started a day before. The Middletown Police Department announced that emergency services were called to the location at the 4400 block of N. Verity Parkway on Sunday, July 7, around 3:45 pm following a report of a body sighted in the river.

The Butler County Coroner’s Office has identified the deceased as Justin Lewis, Jr., a 19-year-old. Initial examinations indicate that Lewis drowned, but the precise circumstances of his death are still under scrutiny. Both the coroner’s office and the Middletown Police Department are persisting in their investigations into the conditions surrounding the incident.

This grim discovery aligns with reports received on Saturday about a missing teenager last seen entering the river at Miami River Park. As the search operations escalated, the police issued a warning via social media, urging the public to steer clear of the area.

Reports indicate that Justin Lewis entered the river on Saturday evening, triggering a search operation involving multiple agencies. “We were hopeful for a different outcome, but tragically, Justin’s body was found,” stated Middletown Fire Chief Paul Lolli. “Our hearts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.”

The search effort included various local agencies, like the Middletown Fire Department, who utilized diverse resources to find Lewis. Firefighters and police officers meticulously scanned the riverbanks and deployed boats to search the water. Their combined efforts underscore the community’s dedication to bringing closure to the young man’s family.

The incident has deeply saddened local residents. One anonymous resident lamented, “It’s heartbreaking to see such a young life lost this way,” adding, “The river can be very dangerous, and this is a stark reminder of that.”

Local authorities have also reiterated the importance of water safety, particularly during the summer months when river activities are prevalent. They stressed the need for caution around or in bodies of water and the importance of adhering to safety guidelines.

The authorities have requested anyone with any information related to this case to come forward. Tips can be directed to the Middletown Police Department.
