The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Friday, July 19, 2024, a deadly listeria outbreak linked to deli-sliced meats. The outbreak has resulted in two deaths and 28 hospitalizations across 12 states, underscoring the significant health threat posed by this bacterial infection.

Primarily affecting the Midwest and East Coast, the outbreak has seen New York report the highest number of cases at seven. The fatalities were in Illinois and New Jersey. The CDC has identified the source of the infection as meats sliced at deli counters, with deli-sliced turkey, liverwurst, and ham being the most likely sources. However, there is no evidence connecting prepackaged deli meats to the outbreak, emphasizing the importance of focusing on deli-counter sliced meats.

According to interviews conducted by the CDC, 16 of the 18 infected individuals had eaten deli meats before contracting the illness. Further investigations are underway to identify the exact types of meat contaminated.

Listeria infections pose a severe risk to certain groups, including pregnant women, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, and fatigue, while others may experience headaches and confusion. Severe cases involve stiff necks, loss of balance, and convulsions. Symptoms can appear from one day to 70 days after contaminated food consumption.

To reduce the risk of infection, the CDC recommends that high-risk individuals avoid eating deli meats unless reheated to an internal temperature of 165°F or until steaming hot. This advice also applies to meats stored in refrigerators, emphasizing the need for thorough reheating before eating. The CDC further stresses the significance of maintaining cleanliness in refrigerators, containers, and surfaces that may have been in contact with deli meats.

While the CDC has not issued a recall on deli meats due to the lack of clarity on the exact contaminated products, they urge the public to remain vigilant and report any symptoms of listeria infection to healthcare providers promptly.

As the investigation continues, adherence to the CDC’s guidelines and public health advisories becomes vital in preventing further listeria cases. The advice to reheat deli meats and maintain food safety practices is crucial. Public cooperation and awareness play a critical role in managing and ultimately resolving this outbreak.
