A tragic accident at K-Gym Fitness in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Indonesia resulted in the death of a 22-year-old woman. The woman, known by her initials FN, was fatally injured when she fell out a third-story window. The incident, which occurred around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, was captured on video.
FN had been jogging on a treadmill by an open window for about half an hour when she paused to towel off her face. Losing her footing, she stumbled backward over a small wall and off the machine, propelling her towards a window roughly two feet behind the treadmill.
Despite her attempts to grab onto the window frame, FN was unable to prevent her fall. Other gym-goers, engrossed in their workouts, were oblivious to the unfolding incident. The woman fell three stories, sustaining severe head injuries. She was immediately transported to a local hospital, but despite the medical team’s best efforts, she succumbed to her injuries. A post-mortem examination detailed significant bruising and lacerations on her head.
FN had come to the gym with her boyfriend and younger sibling, who had suggested they exercise on the second floor. However, FN chose to use the treadmill on the third floor. At K-Gym Fitness, a personal trainer is typically on duty to close any open windows, but at the time of the accident, no trainer was present. A warning sticker was attached to the window, cautioning gym-goers against opening it, but the message had faded and was no longer legible.
Pontianak Police Commissioner Antonius Trias Kuncurojati highlighted the window’s close proximity to the treadmill and its low height as potential contributors to the accident. The police are investigating the gym for possible negligence, and its operating license is currently under scrutiny.
The head of the Pontianak City Investment and One-Stop Integrated Services Service, Mr. Hidayati, stated: “This is a place where the treadmill has its back to the glass. It is very dangerous and there is no security. If we were exercising, accidents should have been anticipated. If someone falls, there must be security so that they don’t fall straight down and die.”
In the aftermath of the incident, K-Gym Fitness expressed their condolences to FN’s family and shut down operations for three days. This closure allowed for a comprehensive investigation and served as a gesture of respect to FN.
