Sarah Becker, popularly known for her time on MTV’s “The Real World,” died by suicide at 52 years old, her family announced. TMZ reported that Becker’s death occurred last week (the second week of June) at her residence in Illinois. She had relocated to Illinois in 2023 to provide care for her sick mother and sister, with intentions to return to California.
Becker was featured in the fifth season of “The Real World,” which aired in 1996 when she was 25. She worked for Wildstorm Comics in La Jolla, California at that time. Becker gained recognition for her self-description as “a 19-year-old in a 25-year-old’s body.”
According to her family, Becker had been battling mental health issues, which were compounded by her caregiving role and a recent skateboarding accident. Her father passed away in February 2024, adding to her challenges.
Becker’s death prompted an outpouring of tributes on social media from friends and former colleagues. Jeff Mariotte, an author and ex-colleague at Wildstorm Comics, wrote on Facebook, “Sarah added sunshine to every room she entered, the fans loved her, and so did we all.”
Joel Benjamin, a friend from her “Real World” period, shared his sadness, saying he recently learned that one of the most wonderful people he had ever known had died. He said every time he thought about her, he pictured her smile and sunny disposition. He added that she was cherished and will be missed.
Comic artist Alé Garza acknowledged Becker for his artistic breakthrough, expressing his appreciation.
Sarah Becker’s influence reached beyond her stint on reality TV. Her run on “The Real World” was characterized by her distinctive personality and her ability to forge connections with fellow cast members and viewers. After the show, she continued to make her mark in the comic book industry, contributing to several projects at Wildstorm Comics.
