Over the recent May 25, 2024 weekend, Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, alongside her husband, Prince William, shared a heartfelt message following the tragic death of Royal Air Force (RAF) pilot Mark Long in a World War II-era Spitfire plane crash at a Battle of Britain event.
The royal couple expressed their sorrow and extended their condolences to the RAF community and the pilot’s family, signing their statement with “W & C” for William and Catherine. “Incredibly sad to hear of the news this afternoon from RAF Coningsby. Our thoughts tonight are with the pilot’s family, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, and the entire RAF community,” the statement read.
The crash occurred on May 25 near RAF Coningsby base in eastern England, leading to an ongoing investigation into the unfortunate event. After the incident, the RAF grounded the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight planes while the investigation proceeded. The Spitfire, a historic World War II aircraft, was participating in a commemorative event at the time of the crash.
RAF Group Captain Robbie Lees, Commander of the Display Air Wing, paid tribute to the deceased pilot, aged 43, describing him as “a great friend, colleague, and a passionate, professional aviator.” He further stated that the RAF would refrain from commenting further until the investigation is complete.
Since publicly announcing her cancer diagnosis in March 2024, Middleton has made few public statements, focusing instead on her treatment and recovery. In an emotional video message, she described her diagnosis as a “huge shock.”
A spokesperson for Kensington Palace updated on Middleton’s condition, stating that she continues to be actively engaged with the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, an organization she launched almost three years ago. “Early childhood will continue to be central to her public work,” the spokesperson informed BBC reporters.
Christian Guy, the foundation’s executive director, revealed that Middleton is enthusiastic about the ongoing campaign. “The early years campaign is rolling on as she recovers,” Guy stated, emphasizing her dedication to her cause during her recovery period.
Prince William, who has served as an RAF search and rescue pilot and an air ambulance pilot, has been fulfilling his royal responsibilities while supporting his wife throughout her treatment. He recently disclosed that their eldest son, Prince George, has shown interest in his father’s career, hinting at a “potential pilot in the making.”
Last month, despite her health challenges, Middleton managed to capture a photo for the sixth birthday of their youngest son, Prince Louis.
Her absence from public events, such as the upcoming Trooping the Colour ceremony, is noticeable. Instead, Lieutenant General James Bucknall will assume the role of Inspecting Officer on her behalf on June 8. This change underlines the gravity of Middleton’s condition and the need for her to prioritize her health.
