On May 31, 2024, the bodies of Cynthia “Cindy” Roberson Gobble, 60, and Gregory Wayne Gobble, 59, were discovered in a forested region in Iredell County, North Carolina. The couple had been reported missing and their discovery marked the end of a search sparked by an Ashanti Alert for Cynthia.
The probe into their disappearance started Thursday evening after family members requested authorities to check on Cynthia at her residence in Mocksville, North Carolina. Officers from the Davie County Sheriff’s Office, upon arriving at the house, found it deserted. Cynthia’s purse, wallet, and insulin were left behind, leading to the conclusion that she did not leave of her own accord.
Given Cynthia’s ongoing divorce proceedings with Gregory, the authorities swiftly suspected foul play. Their family reported that they had lost contact with the couple since late Wednesday afternoon. The search for the Gobbles subsequently became more intense, with law enforcement combing familiar locations. Gregory was quickly deemed a person of interest, leading authorities to focus on locating his white Ford truck.
On Friday, a call was received by the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office about two bodies discovered near Sheffield Road, straddling the Iredell-Davie County boundary. The bodies were identified as those of Cynthia and Gregory, both bearing gunshot wounds. The presumed murder weapon was also found in close proximity to the bodies.
Evidence gathered from the scene suggested that Gregory had fatally shot Cynthia before ending his own life. Davie County Sheriff J.D. Hartman stated, “It’s a tragic end to a very concerning case,” extending his condolences to the families and loved ones affected by the incident.
Recently, Cynthia had filed for legal separation from Gregory, pointing to cyberstalking incidents and the placement of a tracking device on her car by him. Court documents highlighted Gregory’s erratic behavior and violent temper, his attempts to distance Cynthia from her family, and his refusal to work or contribute to household expenses following their 2012 marriage and their move into the house she had shared with her late former husband. The court awarded her sole ownership of the house they occupied. The community was left stunned by her abrupt disappearance and the subsequent discovery of the bodies.
Cynthia’s son expressed his sorrow on social media, reeling from the loss of his mother and describing the situation as a nightmare. “I’m trying to process what happened, but it all seems like a nightmare until I realize I’ll never be able to tell my Mom I love her again,” he wrote.
Law enforcement officers have since closed the case, confirming that there is no ongoing threat to public safety and no other suspects are involved. However, they are still seeking further information regarding the couple’s activities between Wednesday and Thursday.
The Davie County Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.
