On June 13, 2024, a tragic incident occurred on a SkyWest Airlines flight, resulting in the death of an eight-year-old girl from Missouri, Sydney Weston. She was on her way to Chicago, Illinois, from Joplin, Missouri with her family when she fell ill and became unresponsive approximately 45 minutes into the flight. This led to an emergency landing at Peoria International Airport in Illinois.
Upon arrival at the airport, the aircraft was met by paramedics who immediately started life-saving procedures. Despite their efforts, Sydney did not have a pulse and was not breathing. She was quickly transported to a nearby hospital where, at 8:05 a.m., she was declared deceased.
Chris Watkins, the Peoria County Sheriff, confirmed the prompt response from the flight crew who provided aid as soon as they were alerted to Sydney’s condition. A representative from SkyWest also expressed appreciation for the crew’s quick action and the medical team’s attendance, stating, “We are grateful for our crew members’ swift response and the medical team who attended to the situation upon the aircraft’s arrival.”
An autopsy performed on Sydney the following day did not reveal signs of foul play, abuse, or neglect. Further tests, including histology, biopsies, cultures, blood hematology, and chemistry, are anticipated to offer more insight in the coming four to six weeks.
SkyWest Airlines, which operated the flight as United Express, expressed their condolences to Sydney’s family. They also recognized the efforts of the flight crew and medical personnel.
The unexpected incident occurred while Sydney Weston was on vacation with her family, leaving them and the community in mourning. A Facebook post by Sheriff Watkins asked for prayers and thoughts for the bereaved family and everyone affected by the tragic event.
Sydney’s family, Whitney and Dan Weston, and her brother Evan, released a statement expressing their deep grief, describing Sydney as a “beam of sunshine with an infectious joy and boundless love for life.” They requested privacy during their time of mourning.
This incident has highlighted the importance of an effective medical response on flights. Medical emergencies in mid-air present significant challenges, despite the presence of medical kits on board. The aviation industry continues to seek ways to improve passenger safety and emergency preparedness.
