In a recent interview, Kevin Costner, the actor, disclosed a little-known plan about his intention to feature Princess Diana in a sequel to his 1992 blockbuster film, “The Bodyguard.” This project, which was initiated with the help of Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, unfortunately, did not materialize due to Diana’s sudden death.
The actor opened up about this prospective collaboration on an episode of PeopleTV’s “Couch Surfing.” He revealed that the concept began to take shape around the mid-1990s, with Sarah Ferguson playing an essential part. “Sarah was really important,” Costner stated. “She set up the conversation between me and Diana and supported the idea.”
The intended sequel was supposed to revolve around Costner’s character, Frank Farmer, safeguarding Diana’s character from paparazzi and obsessive fans, eventually leading to a love affair. Diana expressed interest and even inquired about a kissing scene with a blend of anxiousness and curiosity. Costner remembered, “She was very respectful and a little nervous because her life was governed. Despite her nervousness, Diana was ready to take on the challenge of acting in a Hollywood movie.”
The project was abruptly stopped following Diana’s car crash in August 1997 at the age of 36, just one day after Costner received the sequel’s screenplay. In later years, Costner had a private meeting with Diana’s son, Prince William. During this conversation, Prince William shared a personal feeling. “The first thing he said was, ‘You know, my mom kind of fancied you,'” Costner recounted. The actor responded to this with humility, simply saying, “I know.”
Costner spoke highly of Prince William, characterizing their exchange as pleasant. “We talked for about half an hour,” stated Costner. “I’ll never say what we talked about, but it was a lovely thing.”
When reflecting on the unfulfilled project, Costner acknowledged how close it had been to becoming a reality and how he admired both Princess Diana and the support from Sarah Ferguson.
Even though the film was never produced, Costner’s narrative provides a peek into what could have been an intriguing intersection of Hollywood and royalty.
