Residents of Rocky Ford, Colorado, a town situated roughly 160 miles south of Denver, are grieving over the death of three-year-old Amari Galan. The young boy, diagnosed with autism, vanished from his home in the early hours of May 18, 2024. His disappearance led to an extensive search operation coordinated by numerous law enforcement agencies and members of the local community.
Amari was last witnessed around 4 a.m. leaving his Washington Street home, clad only in a diaper. His disappearance sparked an immediate reaction from local law enforcement, who utilized drones, search dogs, and foot patrols in the quest to find him. However, despite their diligent efforts, the operation concluded tragically when they located Amari’s body several miles downstream in the Catlin Canal, at approximately 5 p.m. the following day, May 19.
The unfortunate discovery was confirmed by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a press statement, which read, “Law enforcement wishes to share its condolences with the family of Amari Galan.” Both the Otero County Coroner and Amari’s family later authenticated his identity.
Mayor Duane L. Gurule of Rocky Ford shared his sympathies in a Facebook post. “May we come together as a community to offer our support, comfort, and strength to the family of Amari Galan during this heartbreaking time,” he stated. Gurule also acknowledged the tireless efforts of law enforcement and search-and-rescue teams, praising their dedication, professionalism, and empathy throughout the search process.
Authorities have said Amari likely left his home on foot in the early morning hours. His young age and minimal clothing heightened concerns over his disappearance. His autism diagnosis added to the urgency of the situation, as it made him more vulnerable and less likely to respond to those searching for him.
Throughout the weekend, search teams meticulously covered the area surrounding Amari’s home, with particular focus on the Catlin Canal, which flows directly behind the property. The canal, a significant feature of the local landscape, became the central point of the search efforts as investigators tracked the waterway downstream.
Drones offered aerial support, while search dogs covered the ground. The community’s residents also joined the search, showcasing the closely bonded nature of Rocky Ford. Despite these comprehensive endeavors, it was the foot patrol search-and-rescue personnel who located Amari’s body in the canal, bringing a heartrending conclusion to the operation.
Mayor Gurule’s call for community unity and support reflects the town’s collective desire to come together in the wake of this calamity. “Our thoughts are with you,” he added in his statement, emphasizing the communal grief experienced by the town’s residents.
As the town mourns, they also acknowledge the unwavering dedication of those who tirelessly sought to find Amari. The CBI’s statement recognized the hard work and empathy demonstrated by all involved. “Your dedication, professionalism, and compassion in the face of such a tragic situation have not gone unnoticed,” the statement read.
