The New York Police Department (NYPD) reported the disturbing recovery of a severed human head from the waters near Shellbank Basin in Jamaica Bay near JFK International Airport in New York on Tuesday, May 7. The discovery prompted an urgent investigation to identify the head and establish if it is related to a previous case in the vicinity.
The macabre discovery was made around 10:10 am along Cross Bay Boulevard near 165th Avenue in the Howard Beach neighborhood. The NYPD’s Harbor Unit was promptly dispatched to the location, officials stated.
The investigation’s primary focus is to ascertain if the severed head could be linked to the case of Lukasz Mikolajewicz, a 46-year-old from Ozone Park. On April 12, a couple fishing found Mikolajewicz’s decapitated body, nearly 600 yards west of the Cross Bay Bridge.
NYPD Chief of Detectives, Joseph Kenny, stated that Mikolajewicz’s death was ruled a suicide by the city’s Medical Examiner’s Office. According to Kenny, surveillance video showed a man dressed in black, matching the deceased’s attire, walking alone onto the bridge and then out of sight. A green rope tied to a metal railing was found at the spot where the man was last seen.
The investigation’s crucial task is to determine whether the found head and body belong to the same person. Forensic authorities will conduct DNA testing to confirm this.
Mikolajewicz’s family revealed that he had previously tried to take his own life four times.
