On Wednesday, April 3, 2024, Mike Kolen, a figure synonymous with the Miami Dolphins’ historic 1972 perfect season, died at the age of 76.

The news was shared by Auburn University, Kolen’s alma mater, where he created a legacy that has lived on. His journey from the college fields in Auburn, Alabama, to the NFL, and later into the business world and mentorship, is a testament to his life of purpose and passion.

Known as ‘Captain Crunch,’ Kolen was a linebacker who played a crucial role in the Dolphins’ undefeated season and subsequent Super Bowl wins. His hard-hitting playstyle and outstanding leadership both on and off the field earned him his nickname.

Despite the physical toll football took on his body, resulting in joint replacements in his later years, Kolen’s passion for the game remained unshaken. ‘I never tried to hurt anybody, but football is a physical game,’ Kolen said. His significant contributions to the Dolphins’ early 1970s success under coach Don Shula continue to inspire future players.

During his time at Auburn University from 1967 to 1969, Kolen stood out with his exceptional play and leadership skills. He received All-SEC honors in his junior and senior years and frequently led his team in tackles in most games he started. Each year, Auburn University honors his legacy by awarding the Mike Kolen Award to the team’s top tackler. This tradition underscores his enduring impact. Kolen was also inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1985.

In his professional career, Kolen achieved remarkable feats including contributing to the Dolphins’ back-to-back Super Bowl victories and their undefeated season, a record yet to be matched in NFL history. His key interceptions in playoff games against Johnny Unitas and Terry Bradshaw were instrumental to the Dolphins’ success. However, his humility and dedication to the team were what many remember most. Former Auburn athletics director David Housel said, “Mike Kolen is one of the finest men I’ve ever known. A rock, a beacon.”

After retiring from football, Kolen transitioned into real estate and business, applying the same ethos that defined his football career. He stayed connected to Auburn, presenting the Mike Kolen Award annually, and spoke of the joy it brought him to recognize and encourage upcoming talents.

Kolen’s dedication to his faith was apparent throughout his career and led to his induction into the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Hall of Champions in 2006. He received several awards for his devoutness, including the National Christian Athlete of the Year Award in 1969 and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes College Athlete of the Year Award in 1970. Housel’s words, “He was a great football player, but he was a better man,” echo the enduring impact of Kolen’s life and career.

Kolen is survived by his wife, Nancy, and their two children, Kelly and John.
