The University of Albany, New York, confirmed the sudden death of their esteemed defensive lineman, Amitral “AJ” Simon, on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. Simon, a hopeful for the upcoming NFL Draft, was 25 years old.
Born and raised in Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania, Simon was recognized for his potential both on the playing field and beyond. His recent pre-draft visit to New England indicated a promising professional future.
Prior to UAlbany, Simon attended Bloomsburg University. During his time with the Albany Great Danes, he stood out as an exceptional athlete, earning numerous accolades in his final season. He was a first-team All-CAA defensive player, a Phil Steele All-CAA first-team selection, and an FCS Football Central First-Team All-American.
Simon’s accomplishments extended beyond the field, earning him recognition for his academic achievements as well. He had been named to the Fall 2023 CAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll, with a high GPA.
The UAlbany football team announced Simon’s passing through its official account, describing Simon as a “tremendous young man and even better teammate,” and an essential part of the program for the past two years.
Greg Gattuso, the head football coach, shared his grief online, reflecting on the joy he experienced coaching and befriending Simon for two years. Gattuso emphasized his deep personal bond with Simon, saying, “My prayers are dedicated to the Simon family. I love you AJ and will always have a special place in my heart for #8.”
UAlbany’s director of digital content and communications, Taylor O’Connor, shared a personal memory of Simon’s humility and kindness. O’Connor recalled joking with Simon about not forgetting her once he reached the NFL, to which he responded with a laugh and a ‘Never!’
In his final season at UAlbany, Simon recorded an impressive 55 tackles and 12.5 sacks. This performance secured his position as the 448th prospect for the NFL draft, as ranked by ESPN.
The cause of Simon’s sudden death was not disclosed. His untimely departure has deeply affected his team, friends, family, and the wider university community.
