The world of music is grieving the loss of Jim Beard, Steely Dan’s influential keyboardist renowned for his contributions to jazz and rock music.

On Saturday, March 2, Beard passed away in a hospital in New York City, New York due to complications from a sudden illness, as reported by a spokesperson on Wednesday, March 6. He was 63.

Born in Pennsylvania, Beard relocated to New York City in 1985, starting a remarkable career in the realms of jazz and rock music. His talent led him to tour across the US, perform with numerous jazz and rock musicians, and notably become a member of Steely Dan in 2008, an association that endured until his death.

Apart from his work with Steely Dan, Beard recently participated in the Eagles’ “Long Goodbye” tour, which culminated in a notable performance in Phoenix on January 20.

Throughout his career, Beard collaborated with music industry heavyweights such as Dizzy Gillespie, the Brecker Brothers, Dianne Reeves, Meshell Ndegeocello, Toninho Horta, and Steve Vai, as mentioned in his online biography. Beard was also a prolific composer, with over 100 compositions recorded by artists like John McLaughlin and Michael Brecker, showcasing his versatility and creativity.

Following the news of his passing, the music community has shared their grief and respect for Beard. Drummer Peter Erskine described Beard as “the glue and such a great presence on so many projects,” and added, “I’m going to miss the man, his wit and his musical incisiveness. You made a difference, Jim.”

Grammy-nominated saxophonist Ben Wendel shared similar sentiments, calling Beard a “musical giant” and a source of inspiration for many. Wendel expressed his gratitude for having known Beard and acknowledged his profound impact on his contemporaries.

Beard’s legacy extends beyond his musical prowess to his role as a mentor and educator. He shared his knowledge and passion for music with the younger generation, influencing many beyond the realms of stage and studio.
