Ronald Reagan’s Daughter Says Dad Would Be Appalled

Patti Davis, Ronald Reagan’s eldest daughter, recently discussed her views on the current American political climate. She believes her father, the former US President, would be dismayed by the rampant divisiveness and absence of civility prevalent in modern politics.

In a February 2024 interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Davis, 71, voiced her concerns about the growing trend of personal attacks and cruelty among politicians. She expressed that these behaviors sharply contrast with the principles her father held during his presidency.

As per Davis, Ronald Reagan, remembered for his hopeful vision of America and ability to cooperate with political opponents, would find today’s polarized political climate unfamiliar and distressing. “He would be really scared for our democracy,” she stated, imagining how her father would view the current negativity and polarization in political discourse. This feeling aligns with her father’s philosophy, which favored unity and productive dialogue over division and animosity.

Davis also mentioned the issue of mental sharpness in potential presidential candidates, suggesting that cognitive tests could be “probably” beneficial, considering the advanced ages of contenders like former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden. With both leading candidates for the 2024 election possibly serving in their 80s, Davis expressed worries about the effect of age on cognitive abilities. This issue is personal to Davis, as her father was 77 when he ended his term, and was later diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

The idea of cognitive tests has been supported by some, including Republican candidate Nikki Haley, who has advocated for term limits and mental competency tests. Davis’s remarks contribute to a wider discussion about ensuring that leaders remain competent to meet the demands of the presidency.

Reflecting on her father’s legacy, Davis underscored his role in concluding the Cold War, asserting that it was not the accomplishment of someone “fractured in age.” She recalled that some of Reagan’s staff had privately expressed concerns about his attentiveness and conduct toward the end of his presidency. However, she emphasized his overall acuity and leadership.

Beyond her father’s term, Davis’s comments critique the contemporary state of the Republican Party. She proposed that Ronald Reagan might not identify or want to associate with the present-day GOP. Her statements reflect a larger debate on the transformation of the Republican Party, particularly following Trump’s term, which deviated from several of Reagan’s core principles.

Drawing from her writings and interviews, Davis provides a unique perspective on her father’s values and how they starkly contrast with the current political climate. She has consistently critiqued the direction the Republican Party has taken, advocating for a return to civility and respect in political discourse.

As the 2024 elections approach, Davis’s views serve as a poignant reminder of the importance of integrity, civility, and unity in politics.
