Jon Bon Jovi Opens Up About Former Bandmate

Jon Bon Jovi, the lead vocalist of Bon Jovi, has recently shed light on the persisting tension between him and his ex-bandmate Richie Sambora. This comes nearly 10 years after Sambora’s surprising exit from the band in 2013 during their world tour.

The two musicians, who share a history of several decades, have not had any communication for the past 11 years.

Richie Sambora, now 64, left the band unexpectedly, citing personal reasons. He wanted to be a full-time father to his daughter Ava, whom he had with his ex-wife, actress Heather Locklear, and also deal with his substance abuse problems. His abrupt departure created a gap in the band, which Jon Bon Jovi, now 62, acknowledged in an interview with Ultimate Classic Rock, saying they have not been in touch as Sambora is no longer part of the band.

While there’s no verbal communication between them, Jon Bon Jovi has hinted at a continued fondness for his former bandmate, signifying the complexity of emotions linked to their shared past and Sambora’s sudden departure.

Despite Sambora’s exit, Bon Jovi continued to make music and tour, with guitarist Phil X stepping in to fill Sambora’s position. This change, while it kept the band going, highlighted the unique role Sambora played in the band’s sound and dynamics.

The strained relationship between Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora will again attract public attention with the forthcoming release of “Thank You Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story,” a Hulu docuseries. The series will document the band’s 40-year journey, featuring interviews with past and present band members, including both Sambora and Jon Bon Jovi. However, Jon Bon Jovi clarified that their inputs were given separately, with no direct interaction during the production.

In a statement to People.com, Sambora expressed that he is open to reuniting with the band in the future, stating that such a situation “definitely could happen.” However, his absence from the 2024 MusiCares Person of the Year ceremony honoring Bon Jovi, due to his mother’s illness, shows that the conditions for a reunion have not yet come together.

The Hulu docuseries, directed by Gotham Chopra, aims to offer a candid view of the band’s history. Jon Bon Jovi has insisted on the series’ authenticity and independence from the band’s direct control, indicating that it will not avoid the band’s more tumultuous times, including their disagreements and challenges over their prolonged career.

The four-part series, premiering on April 26, will delve into Bon Jovi’s highs and lows, key moments that shaped their legacy, and the uncertainty surrounding Jon Bon Jovi’s future. This includes a vocal injury that almost ended his career and the band’s progress.

The series also includes a candid portrayal of Jon Bon Jovi’s recent health scare, displaying him in a hospital bed. It details his journey through significant reconstructive surgery on his vocal cords, described as rehabilitating a paralyzed vocal fold with a plastic implant, highlighting the physical and emotional demands of sustaining a long-term career in rock music.

Jon Bon Jovi’s openness about his health condition and its effect on his performance adds depth to the series. His stage return after surgery, marked by a live performance with Bruce Springsteen, and his recognition as MusiCares Person of the Year for 2024, not only underlines his contributions to music but also his philanthropic endeavors.

The docuseries provides a comprehensive view of Bon Jovi’s rise from local Jersey Shore clubs to international fame, featuring interviews with key figures such as Bruce Springsteen, Richie Sambora, and other band members. The series, including personal videos, unreleased demos, original lyrics, and never-before-seen photos, offers an unparalleled insight into the band’s journey.
