In Charlotte, North Carolina, a three-year-old boy lost his life in an accidental shooting incident at his residence, as reported by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) on the evening of February 21, 2024.
The CMPD received an emergency call just after 5:30 pm, and officers promptly arrived at a house on the 2300 block of Eastway Drive. They found the child critically injured. Despite CPR on-site and swift transportation to a local hospital, the child could not be saved.
Early reports indicate that the child found an unsecured firearm in a moment of unsupervised curiosity and accidentally fired it, causing his own death. The firearm was reportedly not securely stored by the child’s mother, who was present in the house at the time of the incident.
Speaking for the CMPD, Major Bret Balamucki emphasized the importance of responsible firearm ownership, including secure storage to prevent children’s access. Balamucki remarked, “Each unsecured firearm is a potential tragedy,” underlining the severe repercussions of carelessness.
North Carolina is one of 26 states with laws designed to keep children from accessing firearms, requiring safe storage to prevent such tragedies.
