On February 9, 2024, it was announced that Carl Weathers, known for his role as Apollo Creed in the “Rocky” film series, died due to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Weathers died peacefully in his sleep on February 2, 2024, in his Venice, California home. He was 76 years old at the time of his death. His family released the news, describing him as an “extraordinary human being” who lived an “extraordinary life.”

The actor had been battling atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease for years. This disease, which ultimately claimed his life, marks the end of a life filled with significant contributions to the fields of film, television, and sports.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is characterized by the buildup of fatty deposits that narrow and harden the arteries, disrupting blood flow and increasing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral artery disease.

Weathers, born in New Orleans, Louisiana on January 14, 1948, first gained fame as a football player. He played college football at San Diego State University before joining the Oakland Raiders as a free agent in 1970. His stint in the NFL was brief, only playing in eight games over two seasons.

Despite his short football career, Weathers found remarkable success in acting. His diverse roles over a five-decade career showcased his wide-ranging talents.

Weathers is most recognized for his role as Apollo Creed in 1976’s “Rocky”. His performances in “Predator,” “Happy Gilmore,” and “The Mandalorian,” along with his voice acting in the “Toy Story” series and appearances on “Arrested Development,” displayed his dedication to excellence and passion for storytelling.

Weathers also directed, including episodes of “The Mandalorian”. His work on this series earned him an Emmy nomination in 2021 for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series, highlighting his contributions to the arts.

Prior to his death, Weathers completed a Super Bowl commercial for FanDuel with former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski. The commercial was aired during the Super Bowl and included a special tribute to Weathers.

Sylvester Stallone, a longtime friend and co-star in the “Rocky” series, paid tribute to Weathers.

In his remarks, Stallone expressed deep sadness and gratitude for Weathers, acknowledging the pivotal role he played in his career and life.

Weathers’ impactful career, blending athleticism and artistry, leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire. He is survived by his ex-wife, Mary Ann, and their two sons.
