A teenager from Barnwell, South Carolina, at nine months pregnant, was tragically found dead less than half a mile from her residence. The 17-year-old, Maylashia Hogg, was a student at Barnwell High School.
Hogg’s aunt first reported her missing on February 8. When Hogg, who was looking forward to the birth of her daughter, failed to appear for her scheduled birth induction on February 13, her family became even more worried. With no initial response from the police, the family turned to Kimberly Kite of the Broken Link Foundation, a group committed to locating missing individuals. Police eventually confirmed Hogg’s body was found around 3:45 p.m. on Sunday, February 18, in Barnwell County.
Hogg, who was excited about motherhood, had decided to name her unborn daughter London Charity, in memory of her own mother who died a year and a half ago.
She is fondly remembered by her family and community as a lively teenager with aspirations of resuming her studies and embarking on a nursing career after the birth of her daughter.
The sorrowful circumstances surrounding Hogg’s disappearance and death have profoundly impacted her family. Hogg’s cousin, Robert Payne, firmly stated, “Whoever did it needs to be in jail. She was only a child. A child with a child.”
A memorial service for Hogg and her unborn child was held on Monday, February 19, at the site where she was found. The gathering brought together family, friends, and members of the community to mourn their loss.
An autopsy was planned for this week to determine the cause of death, aiming to shed light on the tragic circumstances surrounding this case.
At present, no suspects have been named in connection to Hogg’s death. The investigation into her death is ongoing, with authorities withholding additional details.
The Broken Link Foundation, along with local enforcement agencies, urges anyone with information about Hogg’s disappearance and death to come forward as the pursuit for answers and justice continues.
