Maricet Espinosa Gonzalez, a highly respected Cuban judoka and Olympic competitor, passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at the age of 34. The death of Gonzalez, fondly referred to as “La Mole” within the judo community, was reported on January 22 by the Pan-American Judo Confederation.

She was born on January 2, 1990, in Havana, Cuba, and quickly rose to prominence in the field of judo, excelling both as a martial artist and an Olympic athlete.

Her achievement of becoming the Pan American Champion in 2013 and 2014, in the women’s 139-pound weight category, cemented her international reputation. She also placed fifth in the World Championships in 2011, garnering respect and recognition on a global scale.

Gonzalez’s participation in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, marked a significant milestone in her career. In the initial round of the competition, she convincingly defeated Phupu Lhamu Khatri from Nepal. However, her Olympic journey ended in the next round against Yarden Gerbi from Israel, a frequent competitor.

Her career included two silver medals at the Continental Judo Championships in 2016. Gonzalez was a beacon of sportsmanship and excellence, particularly in her home country of Cuba, where she inspired many upcoming athletes with her commitment and talent.

The Manuel Fajardo Cuban Sports University, where Gonzalez was a notable figure, announced her passing on Facebook. The post expressed profound sadness and offered condolences to her friends, family, and colleagues.

It is suggested in various reports that complications following a breast augmentation surgery on January 21, 2024, may have led to her fatal heart attack. The connection between the surgery and her subsequent heart attack has been a topic of discussion in multiple media outlets, while the exact circumstances surrounding her death are still being investigated.

The world of judo, and indeed the wider sporting world, will continue to honor Maricet Espinosa Gonzalez’s accomplishments and the inspiration she provided. Her untimely death is a significant loss to sport.

Gonzalez was in Armenia at the time of her death, accompanied by her sister and daughter who reside there. A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to cover the costs of bringing her remains back to Cuba.
