Early in the morning on Thursday, February 1, 2024, a couple, recently married, was fatally shot in the Sports Page Barr in Elkhorn, Wisconsin.
The victims were identified as Gina Weingart, 37, an employee at the bar, and her husband, Emerson Weingart, 33. Currently, a person of interest is in police custody.
The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call just after midnight, reporting an incident of gunfire at the Sports Page Barr.
Upon their arrival, law enforcement found the couple already deceased from their injuries. This event has shocked the usually peaceful Elkhorn community, as violent incidents of such nature are uncommon.
Gina and Emerson Weingart had just started their marital journey in June 2023. Gina was a part-time bartender at the Sports Page, while Emerson often accompanied her during her late-hour shifts.
Jordan Barr, the bar’s owner, took to Facebook to express his sorrow, calling the Weingarts close friends and valued members of the Sports Page family. He strongly denounced the violent act, reflecting the feelings of the entire community.
The Elkhorn police have been thoroughly investigating the case. On Monday, they reported a breakthrough. A person of interest related to the shooting deaths has been detained. The individual was arrested on unrelated charges, and the inquiry into the shooting’s motive and circumstances is ongoing.
The authorities are yet to establish whether the shooting was targeted or a random act of violence. The motive for this tragic incident is still unclear.
Leland Weingart, Emerson’s brother, spoke on behalf of the family, saying, “We are all just devastated right now and pray that Emerson and Gina get the justice they deserve.”
The funeral services for the deceased couple are planned for Saturday, February 10, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burlington, Wisconsin.
The Elkhorn Police Department is urging anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward.
