A small plane, carrying four Canadian skydivers and a Mexican pilot, was forced to make an emergency landing on Playa Bachoco, a popular beach in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico, on February 11, 2024.

The unexpected landing led to the death of a 62-year-old Mexican tourist, Armando D.C., who was at the beach with his wife at the time.

Injuries were sustained by five individuals, including the four Canadian skydivers, aged 60, 59, 41, and 35, and a 40-year-old Mexican man. All victims were hospitalized and reported to be in stable condition.

Initial reports from Civil Protection officials indicate that the plane was forced to land, although the specific reasons for this action were not immediately provided. The aircraft, a Cessna Caravan, was operated by Skydive Puerto Escondido, a local skydiving business.

The plane landed almost directly on top of Armando D.C., a resident of San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca, despite remaining largely intact. His wife, who was also present, escaped without injuries.

The incident has prompted questions about the safety of skydiving operations and the use of public beaches for emergency landings. Investigations into the cause of the mechanical failure that resulted in the crash are ongoing, with local and aviation authorities examining the circumstances closely.

The crash occurred on Bacocho Beach, a location known for its natural beauty and tourist appeal. The tragic event has started discussions on public safety and regulations concerning aviation.

Oaxaca Governor, Salomón Jara Cruz, extended his condolences and assured assistance for the victims and their families, highlighting the state’s obligation to protect both its residents and tourists. The nearby community and local businesses have also offered support to those affected by the incident.
