Tony Hutson, a former guard for the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins, died on February 3, 2024, at the age of 49. His death was made public via an online obituary posted by Serenity Gardens Funeral Services. The cause of death has not been revealed.

Hutson, born March 13, 1974, in Houston, Texas, began his football career at MacArthur High School as an offensive tackle. He further honed his skills at Kilgore College before transferring to Northeastern Oklahoma State University. His outstanding performance on the field earned him NAIA All-American honors in 1994 and 1995.

Despite his achievements in college, Hutson’s early professional career was marked by adversity. In 1996, a physical exam by the Raiders discovered a benign tumor on his right lung. Following successful surgery to remove the tumor, Hutson signed with the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent.

Hutson’s time with the Cowboys from 1996 to 2001 showcased his resilience and determination. He spent 1996 on the practice squad and missed most of the 1997 training camp due to wrist surgery. Nevertheless, he debuted later that year and achieved his first start in a notable 17-14 win over Washington.

Throughout his NFL career, Hutson also played briefly as a free agent for the Washington Redskins and was signed by the Oakland Raiders in 2001 also as a free agent. Despite facing numerous injuries and challenges during his tenure with the Cowboys, Hutson’s significant contributions, particularly in protecting Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman, were noteworthy.

Teammates remember Hutson’s dedication to the sport and his team, including Randall Godfrey, who acknowledged Hutson as one of his favorite teammates and valued friends.

Outside of his achievements on the field, Hutson is remembered for his humor, kindness, and active participation in charitable endeavors, especially those involving children, leaving a lasting legacy beyond his football career.

Hutson is survived by his mother, Joyce Figures of Dumas, AR, his three children: daughter Lauren Benton and sons Christian Benton and Antonio Fleming, all from Houston, TX, and several siblings.
