Former Major League Baseball pitcher, Patrick Mahomes Sr., father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, was apprehended for suspected driving while intoxicated (DWI) in Tyler, Texas, on Saturday, February 3.

The incident marks at least the third DWI charge for Mahomes Sr., as documented by jail records. The arrest occurred right before his son, Patrick Mahomes II’s, great performance in Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers.

On Saturday, the Smith County Jail booked 53-year-old Mahomes Sr. After posting a $10,000 surety bond, he was freed on Sunday. His past legal troubles include a 2018 DWI conviction, which led to a jail stint of 40 days, served over weekends, emphasizing a recurring pattern with such offenses.

During a media event at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, reporters interrogated the Chiefs’ notable player about his father’s arrest. Mahomes responded, albeit stating his hesitation to delve deep into the matter, asserting it as a private family concern.

When asked about his father’s situation, the accomplished quarterback said, “He’s doing good. I don’t really want to get into it too much, but he’s doing good for whatever the situation is.”

Mahomes Sr. had an 11-year MLB career from 1992 to 2003, pitching for various teams, including the Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox. He made a significant contribution to the 1999 National League playoffs with the Mets. Besides his sports career, he hosts “The Big Mahomes Show,” a podcast that explores the details of professional sports.

The arrest of Mahomes Sr. presents a personal hurdle for Patrick Mahomes II as family-related incidents often attract unwanted public and media scrutiny.

Considering this is his third DWI charge, the elder Mahomes could face stringent penalties if found guilty, potentially including two to ten years of imprisonment. This underlines Texas’ serious repercussions for repeated DWI offenses.

Mahomes Sr. is the father of three children: sons Patrick Mahomes II and Jackson Mahomes with his former wife Randi Martin, and daughter Zoe Mahomes from a subsequent relationship.
