A 19-year-old man, known only as Sebastian, was arrested in Quiroga, Michoacan, Mexico, for allegedly beheading his 26-year-old sister, Julieta.
The incident took place on Saturday, December 30, 2023. Witnesses claim to have seen Sebastian, who appeared intoxicated, carrying Julieta’s dismembered head in broad daylight near a government clinic.
Local police were alerted by witnesses and were able to apprehend Sebastian near the clinic without any conflict. A rifle believed to belong to Sebastian was also seized at the time of the arrest.
Later, Michoacan State Police discovered Julieta’s unclothed body near a gas station, a short distance from the clinic. Her severed head was found in close proximity to her body.
Sebastian is currently in custody at the Michoacan State Prosecutor’s office, which is investigating him for the alleged homicide of his sister.
This horrific incident bears resemblances to another gruesome crime in San Mateo Atenco, State of Mexico, in October 2022. In that case, a man named Lev Norman was arrested with the decapitated head of Lucero Yazmin in his backpack. Norman, who was found bloodied and under the influence of drugs, admitted to the crime and led police to Yazmin’s body.
Murders and femicides are not uncommon in Mexico. Government statistics show an average of 10 women or girls are killed each day by intimate partners or family members.
The motive behind Julieta’s murder has not been revealed by the police, and it is unclear if any other suspects might be involved.
The state prosecutor’s office in Michoacan has yet to release any additional statements regarding the case. The investigation is still ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the full account of the incident.
