A tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, in Clifton, New Jersey, when Richard Berdnik, the Passaic County Sheriff, took his own life in the restroom of a bustling Turkish restaurant, Toros.
A shot was heard from the basement bathroom around 3:30 p.m., shortly after Berdnik, in good spirits, posed for a photograph with some acquaintances.
Berdnik, who was in his mid-60s, had a distinguished career in law enforcement, having served as the Passaic County Sheriff since 2011 and was reelected for his fifth three-year term in November 2022.
Berdnik’s tenure was characterized by his commitment and significant contributions, especially his leadership during recent flooding events in the region as noted by Paterson Mayor, Andre Sayegh.
Prior to serving as sheriff, Berdnik had an esteemed career with the Clifton Police Department, where he headed the juvenile division and the SWAT team.
Berdnik’s unexpected death occurred amidst internal struggles in the Sheriff’s Department, which included the impending layoffs of 29 correctional officers due to the closure of the county jail and recent charges against officers for violating a prisoner’s civil rights.
A product of Clifton High School, Berdnik was an active member of his community, a parishioner at St. Andrew’s Church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He leaves behind his wife, Monica, and their four grown children. The wave of condolences from colleagues, officials, and community members testifies to his legacy as a public servant and family man.
Governor Phil Murphy voiced his sorrow over the loss, emphasizing Berdnik’s leadership and their personal friendship.
