Amanda Hanson, a respected journalist and news anchor from Memphis, Tennessee, passed away at 38 on Thursday, January 25, 2024.

Hanson’s death came as a result of complications from a medical emergency, leaving her colleagues, viewers, and the entire community shocked and saddened.

Beginning her media career at 20 as a weekend DJ at WHBQ-FM in Memphis, Hanson transitioned to television journalism. She initially worked with WREG-TV before securing a position as a news anchor at KAIT in Jonesboro, Ark.

Known for her lively “Dance Party Fridays” at KAIT, Hanson earned the amicable title of “Dancin’ Hanson” from her colleagues.

In 2021, Hanson became a part of the Action News 5 team in Memphis, playing a pivotal role in the station’s digital innovation. Her zeal, creativity, and commitment to digital journalism significantly contributed to the news team.

Colleagues described Hanson as a person of “infectious energy” and “unwavering dedication,” who worked tirelessly to boost the station’s digital footprint.

Apart from her professional accolades, Hanson’s passion for dancing, which she started at eight, was a notable facet of her life.

Recently wed to Darren Niedermyer, she loved making home improvements and often danced in her kitchen with her husband, as seen in a charming video shared by Action News 5.

In terms of academic pursuits, Hanson had equally impressive credentials. In 2020, she obtained a master’s degree in strategic communications, demonstrating her commitment to journalism.

K8 News, where Hanson previously worked, stated that her death resulted from complications of a medical emergency earlier that week. The specifics of the medical emergency were not shared.

The announcement of Hanson’s death triggered an overwhelming response of tributes and condolences from colleagues, viewers, and admirers of her work.

Former colleague and fellow journalist Diana Davis from KAIT8 expressed her disbelief and grief over the loss of her friend and colleague, Amanda, on Facebook. She eloquently remembered the vibrancy and joy Amanda brought to their workplace, even in the early hours of the day.

Davis reflected on Amanda’s closeness with her family, her time spent teaching dance to Davis’ daughter, and sharing music with her son.

Davis acknowledged Amanda’s supportive nature and sense of humor during challenging times, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and commended the unique qualities that made working with Amanda at the TV station an unforgettable experience.
