Legendary NASCAR driver Cale Yarborough, renowned for his impressive track record, died at the age of 84 on Sunday, December 31, 2023, in Florence, South Carolina.

Yarborough was born in Timmonsville, South Carolina, and rose from humble beginnings in farming to become a revered figure in NASCAR, demonstrating a strong sense of determination and resilience throughout his journey.

With a NASCAR career that spanned over four decades, Yarborough achieved 83 Cup Series victories, including securing the prestigious Daytona 500 four times and winning the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway five times. He is among the seven drivers who have achieved more than 80 Cup Series victories, tying with Jimmie Johnson for the sixth-most wins in NASCAR history.

A memorable event in Yarborough’s career was the 1979 Daytona 500, the first race to be broadcast live nationwide. During this race, Yarborough and fellow driver Donnie Allison collided on the last lap. The subsequent altercation between Yarborough and the Allison brothers garnered significant media attention and became a landmark moment for NASCAR.

Yarborough made history by winning three consecutive Cup Series championships from 1976 to 1978. This record remained unbeaten until Jimmie Johnson captured five consecutive titles from 2006 to 2010. Yarborough retired from full-time racing in 1980.

Even after retiring, Yarborough continued to make contributions to his community. He branched out into the automotive industry and served as a member of the Florence County Council, demonstrating his dedication to public service.

Jim France, NASCAR Chairman and CEO, honored Yarborough’s memory by acknowledging him as one of the greatest drivers in the sport’s history. Yarborough was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2012.

Yarborough’s survivors include his wife, Betty Jo, and his daughters, Julie, Kelley, and B.J.
