A 23-year-old father of three from Michigan was arrested on Christmas Day after allegedly shooting his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend.
The incident took place shortly after Deandre Patrick Lawrence had dropped off Christmas presents for his children at the residence of his former girlfriend.
The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office stated that upon Lawrence’s arrival to deliver gifts to his children, the situation rapidly escalated into a violent encounter with the new boyfriend, who resided at the same location. As the victim attempted to escape the conflict, he tripped and fell, at which point, Lawrence is alleged to have shot him twice in the back.
The victim, whose age was not disclosed in the reports, survived the assault but is in critical condition. Lawrence was subsequently arrested and is now facing serious charges, including assault with intent to murder and felony firearm possession.
Lawrence, who has previous felony convictions for fleeing and eluding, and home invasion in Wayne and Macomb County, pled not guilty during his arraignment. His bail was set at $1 million, and if released, he is ordered to have no contact with the victim or witnesses, and must be monitored via a GPS tether.
Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido commented on the incident, stating, “Violent actions have no place in resolving disputes. Our thoughts are with the victim and his family. We will work to ensure accountability for this terrible Christmas Day shooting.”
A probable cause conference for Lawrence is scheduled for January 4, 2024, followed by a preliminary examination on January 11. This case has brought attention to the issue of domestic violence, especially during times that are traditionally considered festive and tranquil.
