In a shocking revelation that has stunned the community of San Diego, California, the remains of Mary Margaret Haxby-Jones, a woman who would have been 81 this year, were found in a freezer at a home in the Allied Gardens neighborhood.

The discovery was made on December 22, 2023, triggering a complicated investigation into a case that may have been concealed for close to a decade.

Identification of the body as Haxby-Jones was confirmed by the San Diego Police Department, working in collaboration with the local medical examiner’s office.

The conditions surrounding her death remain puzzling, with authorities treating the incident as suspicious. Lt. Jud Campbell from the San Diego Police Department stated that there were no clear indicators of trauma on the body, further deepening the mystery.

Officials stated that Haxby-Jones, a nurse anesthetist with a career spanning 20 years, may have been dead or missing for up to nine years. Her body was discovered by family members of the current homeowner, who were visiting from out of state. The relatives, who were not related to Haxby-Jones, found her remains in the freezer at the residence located on Zion Avenue’s 4900 block.

The case has attracted considerable attention, primarily due to the extended period Haxby-Jones is believed to have been dead or missing, potentially up to nine years.

Investigators are probing the events leading to her death and the subsequent period. No missing person’s report was filed for her, yet it is believed she lived at the residence before her body was found.

The San Diego Police Department’s homicide unit has been engaged due to the unusual nature of the case.

An anonymous relative of Haxby-Jones told a local news outlet that the family was estranged. They described the ongoing situation as unfortunate, stating, “We don’t feel comfortable commenting at this time because we weren’t there and don’t have answers to these questions.” They recalled Haxby-Jones, last seen in 1995, as someone who often smiled, enjoyed personal grooming, and was a military veteran.

The exact time of her death remains unknown, and officials are appealing to anyone with relevant information to come forward.

The medical examiner’s office is yet to release its findings, which could shed light on the cause of Mary Margaret Haxby-Jones’ death.
