Deputy Sheriff Dies in High-Speed Chase Collision

A 31-year-old Deputy Sheriff in Coweta County, Georgia, Eric Minix, lost his life during a high-speed police pursuit on January 4, 2024. The chase began in Coweta County and extended into Chambers County, Alabama on Interstate 85 in the early morning hours.

Deputy Minix, an esteemed officer of the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, was participating in a joint agency pursuit of a stolen vehicle. As he was exiting his vehicle to apprehend the suspect, Minix was hit by a police vehicle from the Lanett Police Department, Alabama. The officer involved in the collision, identified as Cornelius J. Robinson, has been put on administrative leave pending an investigation.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has taken the lead in investigating the incident. The focus of the investigation revolves around the circumstances that instigated the high-speed pursuit and the fatal collision that ensued. The motive behind the pursuit of the stolen vehicle, driven by Decedric Donson, 25, from Pensacola, Florida, is yet to be established.

The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office announced their profound grief over the loss of Deputy Minix, recognizing him as an exemplary deputy, individual, and companion. In their statement, they emphasized his contributions as a K-9 officer and his friendly demeanor.

The driver of the stolen vehicle, Donson, was eventually halted by stop sticks and subsequently arrested. He now faces charges related to vehicle theft and attempting to evade law enforcement officers.

Deputy Minix’s untimely death has left a grieving family behind, including his wife and three young daughters.
