Adan Canto, a distinguished Mexican-American actor, died on January 8, 2024. Canto, aged 42, was widely recognized for his versatile roles in the television and film industry.

The actor’s death came after a private struggle with appendiceal cancer, a rare disease that originates in the appendix. Recently, this disease has been increasingly diagnosed, especially among individuals under 50. Its symptoms often mimic other gastrointestinal diseases, causing frequent misdiagnoses. The usual treatment includes surgery and heated chemotherapy. Early-stage appendiceal cancer has a five-year survival rate ranging from 67% to 97%.

Canto was born on December 5, 1981, in Ciudad Acuña, Mexico. His early years were spent performing traditional Mexican music, which influenced his initial career as a musician. The actor then moved to San Antonio, Texas, and Mexico City, where he led the music group, Del Canto, showcasing his wide-ranging artistic abilities.

On switching to acting, Canto landed his first significant role in American television as Paul Torres in the Fox series “The Following” in 2013, marking his initiation into the U.S. television circuit.

Over his career, Canto played various influential roles, including Rodrigo Lara Bonilla in “Narcos,” and Sunspot in the 2014 movie “X-Men: Days of Future Past.”

His most recognized role was as Aaron Shore in “Designated Survivor” from 2016 to 2017, and his latest portrayal was as Arman Morales in the crime drama “The Cleaning Lady.”

Apart from his acting career, Canto also extended his creativity behind the scenes. He directed and produced two short films, with his work on “The Shot” winning him several awards for best narrative short film.

Canto’s death has sparked an outpouring of heartfelt tributes from both colleagues and fans. Warner Bros. Television and FOX Entertainment, where Canto had been a collaborator since his U.S. debut, expressed their grief over the demise of a “wonderful actor and dear friend.” They lauded his exceptional performance in “The Cleaning Lady,” highlighting his artistic skills, range, and vulnerability.

He is survived by his wife, Stephanie Ann Canto, and their two young children, Roman Alder, aged 3½, and Eve Josephine, aged 1½.
