A 33-year-old social media influencer, beauty entrepreneur, and mother of three was shot by her estranged husband in front of their daughter.
On December 22, 2023, the Honolulu Police Department responded to a murder-suicide case at Pearlridge Center’s parking lot in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Theresa Cachuela was the victim of a fatal shooting by her 44-year-old estranged husband, Jason Cachuela. Their young daughter, aged between six and eight, was a direct witness to the incident and later informed the police of her father’s involvement.
Following the shooting, Jason Cachuela escaped in a gray Mazda, only to take his own life shortly after. The murder took place subsequent to Theresa obtaining a temporary restraining order (TRO) against him two weeks prior. The restraining order led to the confiscation of Jason’s firearms by the Honolulu Police Department.
Lieutenant Deena Thoemmes of the police department emphasized that the shooting was not random, but a result of the couple’s deteriorating relationship. Theresa’s mother, Lucita Ani-Nihoa, shared her grief, particularly for her granddaughter who witnessed the tragedy.
Ani-Nihoa talked about the difficulties Theresa faced in her marriage, including a threatening incident involving a knife, as mentioned in the restraining order petition. Theresa’s efforts to help Jason were in vain, as his condition deteriorated, prompting her to file for divorce.
Theresa had been vocal about the abuse and stalking she suffered at Jason’s hands, leading her to seek legal protection.
In the wake of the tragedy, a GoFundMe page has been set up to support the family with funeral costs.
