A 16-year-old high school football player died in a hit-and-run incident in Valdosta, Georgia, while attempting to aid an injured dog. The tragic event took place on December 9, 2023, on Inner Perimeter Road.

Samuel Johnson Jr., a student at Valdosta High School, was walking near the 3900 block when he noticed the injured animal. During his attempt to help the dog, Johnson was hit by a dark-colored Dodge Charger, believed to be from model years 2011 to 2014. The driver left the scene without stopping.

A passerby found Johnson and a second injured dog in the grass median. Emergency services were called, but unfortunately, Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. The first dog was also found dead.

Two days later, on December 11, the hit-and-run driver involved in the incident surrendered to police at their headquarters. This came after the police had released a vehicle description. The vehicle was subsequently located, although details regarding any arrests remain undisclosed.

Johnson’s football team, the Wildcats, shared their sorrow in an Instagram post, mourning the loss of their teammate. A memorial service was held for Johnson on December 10 at Perimeter Road Baptist Church in Valdosta, followed by a burial in Lowndes County.
