Soap Opera and TV Actor Passes Away at 93

Jack Axelrod, a revered figure in the American entertainment industry known for his portrayal of mob boss Victor Jerome on the television series “General Hospital,” passed away on November 28, 2023. He was 93. According to his representative, Jennifer Garland, Axelrod died of natural causes in Los Angeles.

Born in Los Angeles on January 25, 1930, Axelrod’s early life included service as a corporal in the US Army, stationed in Germany from 1953 to 1955. Post-military, he pursued studies in architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, before transitioning to a career in the performing arts.

Axelrod’s distinguished acting career spanned over five decades, showcasing his versatility and staying power in the industry. His most memorable television role was in “General Hospital,” with 40 episodes between 1987 and 1989. His television career also included appearances in hit series like “Grey’s Anatomy,” “My Name is Earl,” “Dallas,” “Dynasty,” “Night Court,” “Everybody Loves Raymond,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” His last film role was in the 2020 movie “Bad Therapy.”

In film, Axelrod debuted in Woody Allen’s 1971 comedy “Bananas” and featured in movies such as “Hancock,” “Little Fockers,” “Super 8,” and “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.”

His acting prowess was refined under the mentorship of Uta Hagen at the Herbert Berghof Studio in New York City. Hagen, a celebrated actor and teacher who passed away in 2004, trained many acclaimed actors. Axelrod’s six years of study with Hagen were instrumental in shaping his career.

Additionally, Axelrod contributed to theater, including a role in a 1969 off-Broadway production of “Macbeth” and the Broadway play “Gandhi.” He also shared his experience and knowledge by teaching theater at various universities.

Garland reminisced about Axelrod’s later years, highlighting his love for drawing, reading the news, and reciting Shakespearean sonnets, as well as enjoying outdoor activities.
