Evan Ellingson, recognized for roles in “My Sister’s Keeper” and “CSI: Miami,” died at 35 in Fontana, California.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department stated that Ellingson’s death on November 5, 2023, resulted from an accidental fentanyl overdose. The incident occurred in a sober living home in California, a facility designed to support individuals recovering from substance abuse.
Ellingson’s family, following his death, mentioned he had maintained sobriety for three years, relapsing after receiving opioids after a dental treatment.
Born in La Verne, California, Ellingson entered acting in childhood, gaining early fame in the 1990s with “Mad TV” and “Titus.” His notable 2009 role in “My Sister’s Keeper” was a career peak, but he left acting in 2010 amid personal difficulties.
Ellingson’s life after acting was troubled by drug abuse, a consequence of his reaction to his brother’s fatal heroin overdose. This tragedy began Ellingson’s own drug use at 19.
In 2021, Ellingson sought recovery at River’s Edge Ranch in California.
His life, though challenging, garnered respect and admiration. Abigail Breslin, his co-star in “My Sister’s Keeper,” remembered him on Instagram as kind and talented.
His career started with a chance discovery at a skate park, leading to a Vans Company commercial. He later appeared in “Complete Savages,” “24,” and “Letters from Iwo Jima.” His final role was in “CSI: Miami.”
Ellingson is survived by his family, including three brothers, in California.
