Esteemed American Actor Dies at 61

Andre Braugher, an esteemed American actor recognized for his diverse roles in television and film, passed away on December 11, 2023, at the age of 61. His death from lung cancer, confirmed by his publicist Jennifer Allen, came after he was diagnosed just a few months ago. 

Born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 1, 1962, Braugher pursued the arts at Stanford University, California, on a theater scholarship. He further honed his skills at The Juilliard School in New York, graduating in 1988.

His acting career gained momentum with his 1989 appearance in the film “Glory.” Braugher earned critical acclaim as Detective Frank Pembleton in “Homicide: Life on the Street,” from 1993 to 1999, winning an Emmy Award for this role.

Braugher later charmed viewers as Captain Raymond Holt in “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” earning four Emmy nominations. His extensive career included roles in “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer” and “Salt,” and appearances on “Law & Order: SVU.”

Braugher’s personal life was closely intertwined with his career. He married actress Ami Brabson, whom he met on the set of “Homicide: Life on the Street.” They had three sons: Michael, Isaiah, and John Wesley.

Before his death, Braugher was preparing for a role in Netflix’s “The Residence,” where he was to play A.B. Wynter. The show was set to start shooting early in the following year, but his passing has halted its production.

Tributes have been abundant, with colleagues and fans honoring Braugher’s legacy in the entertainment industry. Terry Crews, his “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” co-star, shared heartfelt memories on Instagram, praising Braugher’s talent and impact. 

Braugher’s portrayal of diverse characters, especially the groundbreaking Captain Holt, has left a lasting impression on the industry. He is remembered for his dramatic skill and comedic timing. He is survived by his wife and sons.
