Ed Budde, the legendary player for the Kansas City Chiefs known for his critical role in the team’s first Super Bowl victory in 1970, passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at the age of 83. His family announced his death through a statement issued by the Chiefs.

Born on November 2, 1940, in Highland Park, Michigan, Budde became a significant figure on the Chiefs’ offensive line during his 14-year career. He was known for his durability and consistency, notably playing every game in his first nine seasons, a remarkable feat in professional football.

Budde’s contributions were vital in leading the Chiefs to AFL titles in 1966 and 1969, culminating in their victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV. His exceptional skills on the field were recognized by his selection to two Pro Bowls after the NFL-AFL merger and being named a five-time AFL All-Star.

Before joining the professional ranks, Budde distinguished himself at Michigan State University, achieving All-American status in 1962. He was a highly coveted player in both the NFL and AFL drafts, ultimately choosing to join Kansas City.

Post-retirement, Budde remained active in the Kansas City community. He served as the longtime president of the Kansas City chapter of the NFL Alumni organization and was a founding member of the Kansas City Ambassadors. This group of former players, coaches, and notable figures is dedicated to supporting the community through scholarship programs, charity golf tournaments, and other initiatives.

Clark Hunt, the Chiefs Chairman and CEO, lauded Budde as a foundational member of the early Chiefs teams and commended his contributions both on the field and in community service.

Budde’s legacy includes a unique connection with his son, Brad Budde. In 1980, Brad was drafted by the Chiefs in the first round, mirroring his father’s career. This event marked the first time a father and son were selected in the same position and round by the same team. The Buddes recently appeared together at April’s draft, announcing the Chiefs’ second-round pick.

Ed Budde was inducted into the Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame in 1984.
