A tragic event unfolded in north Spokane, Washington, as a four-year-old boy was killed by his family’s dog on the night of Halloween. The Spokane Police Department reported that the fatal attack occurred inside the boy’s home around 8 p.m., near N. Nevada St. and E. Walton Ave.
Police officers arriving at the scene encountered the critically injured child. They, alongside emergency service workers, administered first aid in an urgent bid to save his life. Despite their exhaustive efforts, the boy was declared dead.
The initial call for help led the boy’s grandfather to a neighbor’s residence. The neighbor, a nurse, promptly responded, finding the child cradled by his grandmother, who was desperately attempting to stem the bleeding. The scene was harrowing, with the grandmother holding the boy amid a scene marked by blood. Roger Hammers and his girlfriend, the responding neighbors, dialed 911, calling for emergency services. The boy was rushed to a nearby hospital, but the extent of his injuries was too great, and he could not be saved.
Authorities identified the dog as a pit bull mix. During the attack, family members fought to protect the boy, inflicting serious wounds on the animal in the process. The dog’s injuries were of such severity that responding officers made the decision to euthanize it at the scene.
The Spokane Police have stated that this incident was an isolated event inside the home and was not connected to any Halloween festivities taking place that evening. The identity of the young victim and other personal details about the family are being withheld by law enforcement at this time.
